Every year, an exceptional teacher is awarded the Impact Award from the Lied center; this year, assistant band director Melissa Smith won the award.
The award has been given to educators and musicians in the community for over 20 years. Smith, who works at both Free State and West Middle School was honored to receive it this year.
“I follow in the footsteps of outstanding educators and artists that have impacted many individuals, students and educational institutions around the community and world,” Smith said.
The award might come as a surprise to Smith herself, but certainly not to head band director Eric Bradshaw. He said he enjoys working with her and can see the work she puts in.
“She’s a very good musician. She is very organized; detail oriented,” Bradshaw said. ”She takes care of a lot of the behind the scenes things.”
Even though you don’t see Smith conducting the band much, she does many jobs that the audience can’t see. Her students take notice of the many tasks she does too.
“She’s not always the one on the podium, but she’s doing all the administrative stuff and making sure everything’s running smoothly for all of the students,” junior Anwen Williams said.
As Willams said the care Smith has for her students is aparent and you can tell she wants all her students to succeed.
“Meeting kids where they are in life’s journey is important. Showing interest in them, letting them know that they matter, yet giving them space to make mistakes and learn from them,” Smith said.
Smith has left an impact on many students through her 32 years in music education. Smith not only works toward success but also tries to connect with students.
“It is nice to be recognized and to know that during my time in Lawrence I have had a positive impact on those around me,” Smith said.
