Throughout the past quarter, students have been hard at work in their art classes. From ceramics with Jacob Lewis and Don Stevanov, photography with Sarah Podrasky, and drawing with Rachel Downs, many unique art pieces have come out of these classrooms.
Senior Natalie Riley started ceramics her sophomore year, and plans on majoring in it in college next year. She recently made a wearable vest out of ceramic chain mail linked together.
“Last year I made chain mail on a much smaller scale, and I thought the flexibility of the piece was really cool and it almost mimicked fabric. So, this year I thought I would expand on that idea,” Riley said. “Ceramics is normally viewed as not able to bend and very fragile, so I think my piece is unique because it can flow, move and it breaks ‘the rules’ of ceramics.”
Freshman Ariza Noscals’ drawing of a hamster holding sushi caught the eyes of multiple other students in her drawing class. Using the rule of thirds and sketching using observation, the drawing came together wonderfully.
“I used to have a pet hamster and my favorite food is sushi. So, I incorporated the two into my drawing and I think it turned out pretty good,” Noscal said. “I started drawing probably when I was in first grade, and I’ve liked drawing ever since.”
Lilian Dixon’s favorite piece she’s made is a tie dyed piece of fabric where the bleached parts have been sewed over.
“I learned to sew in kindergarten and started off making mini stuffed animals out of used fabric,” Dixon said. “My inspiration a lot of the time stems from different cultures and the way they make art versus how I perceive it.”
As we dive deeper into the school year we can expect more great work from students.
