Recently the University of Kansas [KU] football team faced off against the Oklahoma Sooners, the number six seed in the AP polls (9/23). After KU came off of a not so great game against Oklahoma State, the Sooners were looking to run through Kansas, especially with KU not having their starting quarterback, Jalon Daniels.
“With Jalon Daniels not playing, I was expecting a pretty easy win,” senior Max Morris said prior to the start of the game.
But as the game went on, fans started to realize KU may have a chance with the score at the end of the first quarter being 7-0.
“During the game I was feeling confident, we were playing and looking solid,” junior Landon Leipold said.
Then just as Oklahoma was heating up, scoring three touchdowns in the second quarter, the game was delayed due to lightning in the area. Many fans looked at this as a negative but Leipold described it as a “blessing in disguise.”
“The rain delay was a disaster, and a blessing in disguise; knowing the way Coach Leipold coaches, he would regroup the guys, come back out and win,” Leipold said.
Towards the end of the game excitement was at an all time high for KU fans everywhere. Finally as the game came to an end fans rushed the field and tore down a goalpost, which has been a long lasting tradition for many years.
“When they won it was just a blessing to know how hard everyone has worked in the program to knock off a top team like that,” Leipold said.
While some Oklahoma fans were not feeling so great, Morris said that he did not get mad and take it the wrong way.
“It is a sign that we just need to refocus,” Morris said.
KU fans enthusiastically celebrated this win but has many challenging games ahead of them. This coming weekend they will be playing Texas Tech who is coming off of a good win against TCU. KU looks to continue their win-streak.
