Following a win for the varsity boys soccer team last year against Lawrence High School, this year’s schedule declared that Oct 12, the Firebirds would be facing off against the Chesty Lions in the annual City Showdown.
After 80 minutes of vigorous play from both the Firebirds and the Lions, the teams were sent into double overtime. After a foul on the Lions was called, junior JJ Zhang then sent a free kick into the opposing team’s goal. This goal ended the game, giving the firebirds the win with a final score of 1-0.
With the close score, senior captain Blake Warner described the pressure of the last minute executions found in the game.
“Being in double overtime like that just brings a new perspective because the finish line is so close and victory so close, but at the same time defeat closer. You have to balance your risks and your opportunities,” Warner said.
Overall, the program finished the city rivalry with three wins on all three levels: C, JV, and Varsity. Varsity will look to continue their successes playing on their home turf tonight at 7:30 p.m. against the Mill Valley Jaguars.
