FYI leaders present their topics at a club meeting. FYI will be working to raise awareness for suicide prevention through the Yellow Ribbon Project.

For Your Information club, (FYI) works to inform students about various issues at Free State. Junior Katie Lane, FYI club leader, explained what their latest project, suicide prevention, is about.

“We are trying to train people in part of the Yellow Ribbon Project, so the first step is to train students and give everyone information about suicide and do different awareness projects to help everyone in the school to learn more about it,” Lane said.

The club will receive training for prevention and then share what they have learned with students and staff.

Junior Sayuz Thapa hopes that this project will be a success and will have a lasting impact on students.

“At some point almost everyone has a friend or family member who considered suicide or considers it themselves and it’s important to know how to help,” Thapa said.

Club sponsor Meg Lyles who is also the school’s Prevention Specialist is also optimistic about the project’s outcome.

“I’m really hopeful that it will be a success and I think that one of the reasons is we’re trying to get the students to spearhead it which always make it more successful,” Lyles said.

The conference is on November 11th and will be three hours long from 8:30- 11:00 a.m. Students interested in going to this conference can talk to Lyles or Ashley Sollars for more information.

“If you have a friend that’s in crisis get help from an adult, get help,” Lyles said. “You don’t want to be the only one who knows that your friend is in crises. You need to get help for that student, there are lots of resources here in Free State to help.”
