Cleo & Leo on Elm Street is a new Mexican-inspired café in North Lawrence and opened in October. The owners have made the most of the small space by adding outdoor seating and several tables with wicker chairs. Adorable homemade decor includes cacti, decorated with ornaments for the holiday season, and dried flowers in vases on each table. A giant custom made mosaic sign bearing the name of the café hangs on the eastern wall, and large windows let lots of natural light into the space.
Baked goods are on display in a glass case, with items such as a funfetti concha and Mexican chocolate crinkle cookies available for purchase. The chewy crinkle cookie has subtle notes of cinnamon and the chocolate taste is quite rich. The baked goods average around three dollars per item, which makes it an affordable treat. I’d rate this cookie four out of five stars – the only thing that would make it better is warming it up!
Their extensive drink menu includes Latin American inspired specialities, which include dulce de leche and churro lattes and a Mexican mocha. Each drink is offered hot or cold, and dairy alternatives are available. The Mexican mocha comes in a ceramic mug with latte art, and tastes strongly of warm spices. The sweetness of the chocolate cuts the bitterness of the espresso and the spice is perfect for an autumn or winter walk. I’d rate this three out of five stars, the spice is an acquired taste but it was such a creative take on a classic coffee drink.
Cleo & Leo on Elm Street also offers more mellow flavors of coffee with their vanilla lavender iced latte. The vanilla flavor isn’t noticeable, but it does add a sweetness that makes the strong espresso more tolerable. The lavender isn’t too rich but instead perfectly compliments the coffee and makes it a wonderful winter through spring drink. I would rate this five out of five stars, I’m definitely partial to iced coffee and they utilize the lavender in a great way.
The staff were kind and patient while I browsed the menu. Part of my order was missing, but they quickly fixed the mistake and were fast at making the drinks. The natural sunlight lifted my mood and I loved being right next to the levee. Overall, the atmosphere is amazing and it’s a great date or study spot!
