Letter to the Editor: Thespian Club Response
January 10, 2017
It was with deep sadness we read about Brittany Swearingen’s time at Free State. The thought that we, the theater community, could have contributed to that experience is equally as concerning. We felt compelled as a club to respond to her statements.
Theater is meant to entertain, educate and open our minds to new ideas, and continually challenge us. We have always enjoyed the opportunity to play people other than ourselves and to present different playwright’s perspectives on the stage.
This year’s black box show, A Night of One Acts, was chosen around the simple theme of love. One show titled Boy Meets Girl, is about two kindergarteners satirizing the dating world, and we considered it very innocent and funny. We never intended to offend anyone with our production and we encourage those who did not actually see it to read the scripts- (Love, Actually and Boy Meets Girl) in order to make an informed opinion and to stimulate further discussion.
Thespian Club is an open and welcoming club, and would never knowingly do anything to cause harm or bad feelings to anyone. We encourage anyone who has concerns regarding the theater to attend our meetings and voice their thoughts. You will be welcome.

This response from students is far more respectful than what was said from the adults who were involved.
Maybe we FS employees should be having the tough conversations and not just leading them.
