For the past 4 years, the Firebirds have been state champions. This year, they’re looking to repeat and win another title.
The team has spent countless hours working on and preparing their pieces for State. Free State holds a showcase for the state team to perform their pieces to family and friends. On May 1, viewers gathered to watch each member perform.
The showcase has always taken place in the commons. This year, it was moved into the auditorium. For seniors on the team, this is the first and last time they’re performing the showcase under stage lights.
”It’s just really nice to be able to be up on stage, have microphones and perform for people because that’s a lot of what forensics is about,” senior Ava Ayala said.
The State tournament is happening on May 4 in Garden City, KS. This means a seven-hour travel day on May 3rd for the team. Junior Kaitlynn Sedich, a 3-year team member, finds traveling to tournaments exciting.
“With a six-hour bus ride, we have a lot of time to hang out, chat and prepare. I think that’s going to be the most fun.” Sedich said.
With the past success of the team, expectations are high for Ayala.
“There’s definitely pressure,” Ayala said.
However, according to Ayala, the chances are looking in favor of Free State.
“I strongly believe that we can do it, and we’re gonna win this thing,” Ayala said.
