February Movie Releases

1. Malcolm and Marie

To be released on February 5th, Malcolm and Marie tells the story of a filmmaker (John David Washington) and his girlfriend Marie (Zendaya) by discussing their past relationship on the way back from a movie premiere. Sam Levinson–most well known for creating the hit HBO show “Euphoria”–is at the helm as director. With actors like  John David Washington, who rose to fame with ‘Tenet’ and ‘BlacKkklansman’, or Zendaya who transitioned from disney channel show ‘Shake it up’ to being considered for an academy award, Malcolm and Marie should be on everyone’s watchlist.

2. Minari

Starring Steven Yeun (The Walking Dead) and Han Ye-Ri, Minari explores A Korean American family that moves to an Arkansas farm in search of its own American dream. I know just by the description this just sounds like another generic Netflix drama that you’ll probably skip, but hear me out. Minari is produced by A24, who over the past few years have done Adam Sandler’s return to drama in ‘Uncut Gems’, a soon to be horror classic ‘Hereditary’ and produced the HBO show “Euphoria.”. Minari made its premier at the prestigious Sundance film festival and currently sits at unprecedented 100% on rotten tomatoes, though only 85 people have submitted their reviews. Minari will be available to rent on February 26th for $20 or possibly the weekend of February 12th, and it will be available at Liberty Hall theatre downtown.

3. Nomadland

Nomadland is the journey of a woman who embarks on the journey through the American West after losing everything during the recession. Chloe Zhao directing is where all of my excitement comes from. Marvel executives  say Zhao’s pitch for the eternals was the best they have ever heard, which makes me even more excited for Nomadland, which is releasing February 19th on Hulu.

4. The Father

A man refuses all assistance from his daughter as he ages. He begins to doubt his loved ones, his own mind and the fabric of reality. Starring Anthony Hopkins as Anthony and Olivia Colman as Anne. The Father is told from the perspective of Anthony’s character–who has alzheimers–so throughout the film you begin to question even what you’re seeing. The concept alone has me super pumped and it helps that it also sits at a 100% on Rotten Tomatoes with 48 reviews. The Father releases on February 26th in theatres and VOD.

5. I Care A Lot

“I care a lot” stars Rosamund Pike, known for her riveting performance in hit 2014 film ‘Gone Girl’ which earned her a nomination for best actress at the 2015 academy awards. A shady legal guardian lands in hot water when she tries to bilk a woman who has ties to a powerful gangster played by Peter Dinklage known for playing Tyrion Lannister on ‘Game of Thrones.’ What has me excited is the dark comedy aspect and Rosamund Pike being the lead combined with Peter Dinklage playing a cynical villain. I Care A Lot has a 93% on Rotten Tomatoes after premiering at film festivals across the world, and releases on Netflix February 19th.
