The school district is currently working to find a suitable way to make up Douglas County’s five snow days.
The Kansas State Department of Education requires school to be in session for 1,116 hours per year. According to Julie Boyle, Director of Communications for Lawrence Public Schools, only the high schools’ schedules currently fail to meet this provision.
“All schools will be in session on the April 15 and April 29 designated inclement weather make-up days, which were built into the 2010-2011 school calendar,” Boyle said.
Principal Ed West estimates that there only an hour’s discrepancy remains between the current calendar and the obligatory 1,116 hours.
“If that is the case, we can probably handle that through a late start adjustment and take care of the issue all at once,” he said. If necessary, the school day may also be extended by a few minutes.
“Unless we have more days missed, I cannot imagine a scenario that would cause us to add days to the calendar.”
With the frigid temperatures beginning to bow to warmer spring weather, it is likely that students will not need to worry about sacrificing their summer vacations for a few more days in a winter wonderland. In the meantime, changes to the schedule will be finalized and disseminated in the coming weeks.
