Best of Lawrence: Sarah Whipple Edition
Best Store Cat- Sunfire Ceramics
There’s usually a broad spectrum for store animals: they either love people and congregate where the customers go, or they try to stay as far away as possible in an attempt to not be seen. However, Sunfire Ceramics’ cat likes to make rounds without being overbearing. From checking on your stenciling periodically to guarding the property from “anti-artists,” this store cat will surely curb your desire of furry animals without obliterating your allergies along the way. And yes, this affection is free.
Best “Escape to the Outdoors” Store- Sunflower Bike Shop
We certainly do not live in Maine or Colorado, where Eddie Bauer and REI stores are as common as Wal-Marts in the Midwest. But Sunflower Bike Shop provides an outlet for those Lawrencians who are prepared to travel to these extreme places, or at least like to pretend to be mountaineers or campers. While prepping for an adventure does not come cheap, buying local can at least make you feel a little more like you’re in the “comfort of your own home” even 1000 miles away.
Best Concert Venue- Liberty Hall
From the Flaming Lips to Matt and Kim, Liberty Hall boasts of hosting some well-acclaimed bands for a night (or two). And who wouldn’t want to play there? Full of psychedelic murals, old-fashioned popcorn machines and optional balcony seating as well as “mosh-pit” capabilities, Liberty Hall gives anyone a great concert experience, regardless of the artist.
Best Salad-Wheatfields
If you’re a health nut, I’ve found your super food salad. Organic greens, chilled beets, quinoa and sunflower seeds are just a few of the stars in this daily delight. And for just $5.75 for a whole plate, the idea that you can buy cheap healthy eats will make you feel happy inside and out.
Best Hidden Treasure- African Adorned
Nestled on the corner of 7th and Massachusetts by Hobbs in an underground shop, African Adorned is literally a hidden treasure. Jewel-encrusted necklaces, bone-shaped rings and various bags and bangles from around the world span the store for reasonable prices. You feel whisked into another country with the rich smell of incense and Indian-inspired cantations. Great for unexpected deals, anything from African Adorned will impress even the greatest world travelers.

I’m from Manhattan, and even I agree that Wheatfields Bakery is the best place for bread in the whole state! My family makes special trips just to get a loaf or two. Awesome stuff!
