The Decemberists
September 7, 2011
At the risk of sounding like a complete hipster, you’ve probably never heard of The Decemberists. They don’t have the pop sound of Britney Spears or the alternative sound of Vampire Weekend. In fact, The Decemberists sound mostly folksy.
I’m usually not a very folksy person. Every weekend my dad listens to hours and hours of folk music that usually makes me want to pull my hair out. However, The Decemberists are different from the usual folk music you can hear on KPR.
They use a vast array of instruments. Some songs feature an entire brass section, some have strings. They have a woman who specifically places the accordion and the bass player plays a string bass.
The Decemberists have been out on the music scene since 2002. Since they banded together (pun intended), Colin Meloy, Jenny Conlee, Chris Funk, John Moen and Nate Query have produced six CDs, their most recent being “The King is Dead.”
